Making solder fume safety easier to understand.

An interactive learning experience created to help people understand the health risks of solder fume, explore real-world scenarios and learn safer working practices.

  • University of Sheffield

The approach

Turning complex information into an engaging learning experience.

The challenge was to communicate the dangers of solder fume in a way that was clear, accessible and practical. Rather than relying solely on written guidance, the project used an interactive, step-by-step format to help users explore the risks, understand how fume behaves and learn the importance of effective extraction.

The experience was designed around real-world scenarios, allowing users to work through different situations, compare extraction techniques and understand how working practices can influence exposure. Clear explanations and supporting visuals helped break down technical information into manageable sections, while guided navigation gave the learning experience a clear structure from introduction through to assessment.

The result was a learning experience focused on making important health and safety information easier to understand and apply. By combining visual communication, interactive scenarios and structured learning, the project aimed to turn complex technical guidance into something practical, engaging and accessible.

The experience

An interactive journey from awareness to safer working practices.

The learning experience was structured into a series of guided sections, taking users from an introduction to solder fume through understanding the health risks, exploring real-world examples and learning how to work more safely.

Rather than presenting everything at once, the content was broken into manageable steps, combining clear explanations, supporting imagery and interactive scenarios. Users could explore how solder fume is produced, compare different extraction techniques and test their understanding through a knowledge check.

The experience was designed to make complex health and safety information easier to navigate, with a consistent interface, clear progress indicators and straightforward navigation throughout.

The result is a visual, step-by-step learning concept that puts the information into context and helps users connect the risks with practical actions they can take in the workplace.

Technical delivery

A flexible technical foundation for an evolving learning experience.

An interactive learning platform needs more than an engaging interface. It also needs a maintainable technical foundation that allows content to be managed, updated and extended as requirements evolve.

For a modernised version of this experience, Umbraco CMS would provide the foundation for managing learning content, instructional text, supporting imagery and guidance through a structured editorial interface. This would allow authorised staff to maintain the content without requiring changes to the underlying application for every update.

The frontend would present the learning material through a responsive interface, with structured navigation, step-by-step scenarios and knowledge checks designed to work across desktop and mobile devices.

The solution would be organised around reusable components and clearly defined content structures, making it easier to introduce additional learning modules, revise existing material and maintain a consistent experience as the platform grows.

The emphasis is on separating content management from presentation, keeping the solution maintainable and giving the organisation a practical foundation for future development.

The outcome

Turning important guidance into a practical learning experience

The result is a structured, interactive learning experience designed to make solder fume safety easier to understand, explore and apply in the workplace.

By combining clear explanations, supporting visuals and scenario-based learning, the experience guides users through the health risks associated with solder fume, the importance of effective extraction and the working practices that can help reduce exposure.

The modular approach provides a clear learning journey, moving from awareness and understanding through to practical examples and knowledge checks. The consistent interface and step-by-step navigation help users engage with the material at their own pace, while the content structure provides a foundation for maintaining and extending the experience over time.

Developed in collaboration with the Health and Safety Laboratory and the University of Sheffield, the project demonstrates how digital interaction and considered content design can help communicate complex health and safety information in a more accessible and engaging way.
